Sierra Leone’s Special Envoy for Trade and Investments, Ambassador Abu, made history on Saturday 26th July 2025, when he attended the highly anticipated women’s heavyweight boxing bout between Claressa Shields and Lani Daniels at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan, as a Very Very Important Person (VVIP) guest.

The Ambassador was invited by Ruben Branson, CEO of Wynn Records, and was accorded exclusive front-row treatment, access to the fighters, and the rare privilege of stepping into the boxing ring. This event marks a significant milestone in sports diplomacy, as Ambassador Abu becomes one of the first Sierra Leoneans to attain such prominence at a global boxing event.
The arena was packed to capacity, with an electric atmosphere befitting the occasion. As the fighters made their entrance, the crowd erupted in excitement. Seated ringside, Ambassador Abu witnessed the high-octane battle up close, immersing himself in the sheer intensity and athleticism on display.
A key highlight of the night was Ambassador Abu’s personal interaction with Claressa Shields, widely recognized as the GWOAT (Greatest Woman of All Time). The two exchanged pleasantries, with the boxing icon expressing appreciation for his presence and support. Ambassador Abu, in turn, extended words of encouragement and solidarity, demonstrating the powerful link between diplomacy and sports.
The Ambassador also held conversations ringside with hip-hop artist Papoose and Wynn Records CEO Ruben Branson, discussing potential future matchups, including a possible Shields–Laila Ali super fight, as well as exploring avenues for investment and entertainment partnerships in Sierra Leone.
The event was star-studded, featuring international celebrities from the worlds of music, film, and sports. Ambassador Abu’s interaction with these global personalities provided an opportunity to further Sierra Leone’s image as a rising player on the global economic and cultural stage.
The fight itself lived up to expectations, as both Claressa Shields and Lani Daniels engaged in a fierce, tactical battle. Shields eventually emerged victorious, retaining her world title, while Daniels won admiration for her resilience and skill.
Ambassador Abu’s participation in this historic night underscores the importance of sports as a tool for international engagement. His VVIP presence at such a landmark event not only elevated Sierra Leone’s profile globally but also demonstrated the country’s readiness to tap into the economic and diplomatic potential of global sports and entertainment industries.
