As the 2028 national election fever gathers momentum, it is expected that the leadership of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL) would have a shake-off. According to reliable sources, His Excellency President Julius Maada Bio is expected to appoint a new Chief Electoral Commissioner and National Returning Officer of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone.

The current Chief Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Mohamed Kenewui Konneh, who conducted the June 2023 national elections, will not conduct the 2028 elections that will be conducted after his retirement.

The President has the power to appoint a Chief Elevtoral Commissioner as stipulated in Section 32 of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, 1991 (Act No. 6 of 1991). Section 32 (3) of the constitution provides that the President shall appoint Electoral Commissioners after consultation with leaders of all registered political parties.
It is therefore expected that the President would consult with political leaders before he would appoint a new Chief Electoral Commissioner.
