It was in 1973 that the Government of Sierra Leone looking to empower local entrepreneurs, industry, agriculture, commerce as well as petty trade set up the Sierra Leone Commercial Bank.

Since that time, SLCB which since its inception has been wholly owned by the government and its people, and solely managed by Sierra Leoneans has not looked back as it continues to grow in strength.

Today, SLCB is the largest commercial financial house in the country.

On Saturday February 15th 2020, SLCB's Board, management and staff joined the public to celebrate what was a very colorful 47th anniversary seen in a sea of red and blue T-Shirts with SLCB inscribed on them.

The anniversary was symbolized with a Walk from the cotton tree in the center of Freetown to the Lumley beach using Siaka Stevens Street, Congo Cross, Wilkinson Road, ending on Kingston-Upon-Hull Road.

Speaking at the climax of the walk at the Lumley Beach, Managing Director Fidelis Turay highlighting the bank’s successes stated that deposit grew from Le600 billion to Le1.2 trillion.

Equity shareholding jumped from 12 million to over 200 million. "This is massive," the SLCB MD said proudly.

The Bank he said also doubled staff strength whilst the customer base galloped from 133,000 to over 200,000.

Using Pentecostal language, MD Turay said about SLCB’s successes that “everything nar double double”.

“These are all your successes,” he said to both staff and customers. He congratulated staff for underpinning the bank’s phenomenal performance.

Three years from now, SLCB will be celebrating its 50th anniversary and will outline what they have achieved within that time. “It is a challenge for all of us,” MD Turay said.
Chairman, SLCB Board of Directors, former Central Bank Governor Dr. J. D. Rogers in a very upbeat mood disclosed that SLCB being the most successful commercial bank in Sierra Leone is due to the policy coupled with the operational strategies put in place in the past one year. Hip! Hip! Hurray! He said.

The Bank’s trajectory going forward is very clear, he said. “We are where we are today. The trajectory is upward and will continue upward as that is the only way to stay in front.”

To maintain the bank’s leading position, he called on all to continue to work harder, as according to one philosopher, the reward of hard work is more hard work and called the operations managers- the drivers of the bank’s success.

He congratulated staff and encouraged them to continue working hard in order to continue succeeding.

The event climaxed with live performance from top Sierra Leonean artists like Markmuday and Rozzzy.
