The Security Sector in Sierra Leone has successfully thwarted a dangerous plot orchestrated by certain individuals, including some senior military officers, aimed at disturbing the peace and harmony of the country and causing harm to unsuspecting people.

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) issued a news release on Monday 31st July, 2023 revealing that massive arrests have been made in connection with the conspiracy, and the suspects are at present assisting authorities with their ongoing investigations.

Initial findings indicate that the group planned to exploit purported peaceful protests scheduled from Monday 7th to Thursday 10th August, 2023 to execute violent attacks against state institutions and peaceful civilians. The release states that despite continued efforts to strengthen peace and democracy in the country, there are still elements both domestically and abroad attempting to undermine stability.

Reassuring the public, the Security Sector affirms that the situation is fully under control, and the nation remains peaceful. Citizens are therefore urged to remain calm and continue with their daily routines, while also staying vigilant and reporting any suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities.

It could be recalled that prior to the numerous arrests by the police, one Colonel Musa Bangura’s name was reportedly playing in an audio doing the rounds on social media regarding a planned coup d’état against His Excellency President Brig. (Rtd) Dr. Julius Maada Bio and his Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) Government.
