It could be recalled that over the last two weeks, the ruling SLPP had been engaged in the process of electing and vetting their parliamentary candidates at constituency, regional and national level to ensure that popular aspirants in their respective constituencies were awarded the party symbol.
According to reliable party sources, the nomination of SLPP’s parliamentary candidates will commence in the Western Area on Tuesday 9th May, 2023 while nomination in the provinces will start on Wednesday 10th May respectively.
A party officer disclosed that though there were some tensions in some constituencies over elections for the award of party symbol, the elections were generally peaceful and non-violent as controversial issues were amicably resolved at constituency, district, regional and national level with the intervention of the party hierarchy.
Meanwhile, many lawmakers of the SLPP in the Fifth Parliament were not awarded the party symbol, especially those MPs who have spent two or more terms in Parliament to allow other party loyalists to represent their people in the august body.
