A staunch stalwart in the governing Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP), Madam Hawa Jalloh, who has served in various capacities in the party spanning from the late former President Alhaji Ahmad Tejan Kabbah’s era, is running-mate to the SLPP candidate for the Chairmanship position in the Western Area Rural District Council (WARD-C) in the Saturday 24th June, 2023 local government elections.
The SLPP candidate for the WARD-C Chairmanship, Eugene Ayo-Cole, is a Christian and after his endorsement through election, he decided wisely to choose a popular daughter of Goderich, Madam Hawa Jalloh, who is a Muslim, for religious balance and her popularity in communities she has served in the WARD as a renowned health professional, including Goderich where she hails from.
In an exclusive interview with Madam Hawa Jalloh at her residence in Goderich, she disclosed that she joined active partisan politics from the Kabbah era, when Alhaji UNS Jah was the National Chairman of the SLPP.
According to her, she served dutifully as a Zonal Executive and later became Constituency Women’s Leader for two terms before she decided to aspire as running-mate to the SLPP candidate for the WARD-C Chairmanship, adding that she started serving SLPP in an executive capacity from the Kabbah era.
Madam Hawa Jalloh averred that her passion to serve her people and to help proffer solutions to their numerous challenges they are currently facing motivated her to aspire for the running-mate position to serve them in council.
The Deputy Chairperson in waiting said: “As a Community Health Nurse, I have been with my people at Goderich where I was born and bred. I have not only witnessed their constraints, I have also been able to identify some of the challenges facing them and one of the ways I should help them better their lives is to be in a position of authority to articulate their inarticulate desires because those who had represented them in council in the past had failed them woefully.”
Madam Hawa Jalloh lamented some of the challenges in many communities in the WARD, including bad roads leading to the beach, Hamilton, No. 2 River, John Obey and Lakkah communities, inadequate health facilities, inadequate market facilities, lack of pure drinking water and other felt-needs of the people which the former leaderships of the council woefully failed to address since 2004 when local government was reintroduced in the country.
“If given the opportunity to lead the council, we’ll address the challenges which the previous council leaders neglected and we’ll take the council to the people through inclusiveness,” Madam Hawa Jalloh, who was born to a Fullah father and Themne mother, assured the electorate. She furthered that if elected, they would work with the people inclusively instead of neglecting them, irrespective of their partisan affiliations, adding that they will also reform the Ward Committee to ensure it thoroughly identifies the felt-needs of the people which the council will use as a blueprint for the development of the WARD respectively.
Madam Hawa Jalloh, who has served the Goderich community in several ways as a professional nurse, politician and as a child of that community, believes she will not disappoint her people if they repose confidence in her by voting for Eugene Ayo-Cole as their next Chairman come June 24 elections. She emphasized that SLPP did not make any mistake in choosing Eugene Ayo-Cle and her for the symbol to represent them in the WARD-C, adding that she also appreciates the party for reposing confidence in them and therefore assured that they would do their level best to deliver as grassroots politicians.
The running-mate passionately appealed to women in general to put their trust in her in order to make the difference by working inclusively for the development of the WARD without any partisan difference.
Born in Goderich, Madam Hawa Jalloh attended Harrison Primary School in the same community and Services Secondary School in Juba. She later pursued State Enrolled Community Health Nurse (SECHN) at the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) between 2009 and 2012 respectively.
